It’s very easy can’t you see to make a costume just for me!

I want to give you a little background info first…I’ve only ever followed a sewing pattern in Home Ec many years ago (let’s not say when that was) and in one sewing class I took at a local college as an academic outreach program to learn some new skills. Needless to say, I’m not real pattern savvy! I rarely use them. Basically, I pull out the the ole notepad, draw my design, take measurements, and write down my dimensions. I then add my seam allowances, get a game plan ready on paper and I’m ready to go.

*TIP-If you need more of a pattern to go by you can always use a roll of brown craft paper to draw out your own pattern.

DIY Sam I Am Costume Instructions

First things first…This is an older project and I wasn’t smart enough to take step by step pictures at that time so I decided to cut out a mini version, snap some pics, and make a collage.

Take your child’s measurements and add your seam allowances on that ole notebook I mentioned before. Once you’ve done that you are ready to begin on the bodice portion of the costume.

DIY Sam I am Costume Bodice Steps

  1. Fold your yellow fleece in half. This will make the front and back of the bodice and with less sewing.
  2. Cut the fleece to your pre-measured width. Give some extra inches so it can be loose.
  3. Fold the cut fleece in half longways. This will make the cuts in the next step the same on each side and it’s less cutting. Bonus!
  4. Cut your armholes and neck hole. If you are unsure how big to make it, measure a tshirt in the their current size (not a fitted shirt, a tshirt) add a couple inches to allow for wiggle room.
  5.  Unfold and make sure the sides are lined up.
  6. Pin sides together and sew keeping in mind your seam allowance.

Great thing about fleece, it doesn’t unravel when it’s cut so there are no hems to be sewn! TIP-if you are unsure about how to measure, you can always take apart an old tshirt and use that as your basis for a pattern.

Next on the list, sleeves…

I sewed these sleeves in the round. You could always sew a flat or a set in sleeve. Whatever works best for you. (If you sew a set in sleeve skip step 6 in the bodice.)

DIY Sam I am Costume Sleeve Steps

  1. Cut, pin and sew sleeves. Take the measurements from your armhole and add the seam allowance for width. Then add in your desired length.  Divide your width measurements in half. Fold over your fleece. Make your markings for the sleeve with your measurements and cut. Pin the seams together and sew.
  2. Flip your sleeve from in side out to right side out.
  3. Insert sleeve. Keep the bodice inside out and keep the sleeves right side out, insert the sleeve into the bodice and pin all the way around.
  4. Sew the sleeve to the bodice. Use the free arm on your sewing machine to sew all the way around your armhole.

Don’t forget to cut out little triangles in the collar, armholes, and bottom of the bodice.

Look at my handsome little man!

Yay! We’ve completed the main garment for Sam I am! What should we make next? How about the hat! It follows a lot of the same principles as the sleeves.

DIY Sam I am Costume Hat steps

Measure your child’s head. Divide that number in half.

  1. Cut out your shape for the top of the hat. Draw out your shape for the hat (I free handed this), keeping in mind the divided measurement of your child’s head for the opening. Pin and sew around all the edges except for the opening.

2.  Make the rim. Once the top of your hat is complete, you can open it up to get the       dimensions for your rim. Draw and cut out your rim with added seam allowance on two pieces of red felt. Sew the outer edges of the of the felt rim together.

3.  Sew the rim to the hat. Keep the hat right side out. Place the rim around the outside edge of the hat and pin into place with raw edges together. Use the free arm of the sewing machine and sew all the way around.

I love this post. I was struggling to find a good costume to make for my son for world book day this year and his dad bought him the book. I searched for the costume but no luck and your post popped up great and easy to follow. Thank you for posting.

Thank you Margaret! It is by far the easiest costume I’ve ever made. You shouldn’t have any problems but let me know if you have questions.

  2. Bekah says:

I’m making this for my son for Dr. Suess week. He will wear it to school tomorrow. I’m having trouble with knowing how to make the rim of the hat…I thought I had it figured out but it doesn’t seem to be matching up?? Can you please give me some instruction?! Thank you!!

    • lacier77 says:

Hey Bekah…let me see if I can help you. If you have the hat top all sewn up, you can stand it up like it would set on a head. Draw your circle according to the out line of the top keeping in mind the measurements of the child’s head. Let me know if that helps.

    • lacier77 says:

Hey Penny! I would measure it for you but it’s packed away in my attic. My kiddo was 6 here. I would make the hat as tall as your child’s head is tall to the curve. Then make your curve and go a little taller. I hope that helps some. ????

    • lacier77 says:

Penny, my neighbor just asked to borrow a costume. My hubby is getting them down out of the attic tomorrow. I’ll measure and let you know.
