Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham DIY Egg Costume

I’m on Dr. Seuss overload! If you follow on Instagram you will see I have been up to my eyeballs working on Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss’s birthday celebration at the kiddos school. It’s one of my most favorite PTO events through the school year. Being that PTO has had me so busy lately, I needed a quick and easy costume for Garrett to wear during the school’s costume parade. Taking my own advice from last years Green Eggs and Ham costume post, I pulled in a couple of Garrett’s friends and made an addition to a previous costume. That’s where this Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham DIY Egg Costume comes into play!

Let’s dive right in and talk Green Eggs Supplies…

Supplies

  • 2 yards white felt
  • 1/2 yard green felt
  • white thread
  • green thread
  • very little batting (you could even use plastic Walmart bags)
  • brown craft paper roll

That is all you need besides the basics, like scissors, pins, and a sewing machine. Honestly, there is very little sewing so you could sew these up, easily by hand, without a sewing machine.

Now let me show you how extremely easy this Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham DIY Egg Costume is to whip up…

Let’s make a pattern.

Anytime I am making a costume for the kiddo, I will use a shirt that currently fits him to help make the neckline. If you use a shirt, you know their noggin will fit through the hole. First, I take my brown craft paper roll (I use this stuff for everything!) and lay out on the table. Then, I take Garrett’s t-shirt and lay on top of the paper. Finally, I just follow the neckline of Garrett’s shirt with a pencil and free hand the shape of an egg. * You can make this really easy if you fold the shirt in half and fold the paper in half….kinda like when you draw and cut a heart or a snowflake. You only need to draw one side and when you cut the folded paper and unfold, you will have the whole egg.

Voila, you have made yourself a pattern! I really like making a pattern on the brown paper first because I can always make corrections to paper without messing up my fabric.

Felt is really easy to cut, so I basically just left my 2 yards of white felt folded from when I purchased which gave me 4 layers in a stack. I wanted to cut all 4 pieces that I would need at once. So all you need to do is make sure you have 4 layers of white felt, the same size as the egg. Pin your cut pattern to the white felt and cut along the outline of the paper.

Remember at this point you only need 2. *I folded the big egg white (brown paper egg white) in half and drew my half circle in the middle of the paper egg white, then cut. None of this has to be perfect because it’s an egg. Another great thing about using felt is the edges are always finished so you can trim it to your liking at any point.

At this point, you want to place a little batting on 2 of the white felt egg whites and pin the green felt yolks over the batting like you see in the picture above.

Now, sew the green felt to the white felt. You can either do this by hand or with your sewing machine. The machine takes less than a minute but by hand would be pretty quick too. Once sewn, remove the pins and turn so the wrong side of a felt egg white with green yolk is facing the wrong side of a felt egg white with no yolk.

Place 3 or 4 pins starting at the neckline going across the shoulder and sew. In the picture the black stitching lines show where I started and stopped. Now flip right sides out and you have a costume!
